Antique Bakery cover

Manga, read on May 11, 2026

Author: Yoshinaga Fumi

Rating:

Thoughts: I first heard about Yoshinaga Fumi through her Slam Dunk doujin work. I was (and still am lmao) a MitsuGure shipper and she was probably the most prominent and prolific creator for that ship! I found this at the library and decided to give a shot. I wanted to like it, but as the rating revealed, I did not...

The comic starts off by introducing the characters through some out of context flashbacks. The first one sees a boy in high school confessing his crush to another boy. The crush is disgusted and rejects him in a homophobic manner. Then we get another flashback with a boxer who is told to quit because he has detached retinas. After that, the main story begins where we see the characters in the bakery serving fancy French desserts to their customers and helping out with their problems. The boy who got rejected is now the head baker and the boxer is his apprentice.

Seems normal enough, but I was immediately beginning to see cracks form a few chapters in as I noticed that every customer who enters this cafe (especially the women) feels the need to fawn over how amazing/handsome/talented the protagonists at the bakery are. If a character is not as enthusiastic about them, it's only because they have some sort of problem that the Antique guys need to solve before they're fawning over them too. This manga is terrible when it comes to showing and not telling, with characters constantly telling us what we should think about other characters. For example, there's numerous times where we're told Ono, the baker who got rejected at the start, is sooOoOoo handsome even though he just looks like any glasses wearing guy in IT.

While it's clear the mangaka is enamoured with her characters because they're all perfect, charming angels, I'm not. And yet I'm now stuck in a universe with them for four volumes. The story gets even more tedious once it leaves its episodic "let's help our customers with our amazing bakery" schtick and begins to be a story about uncovering our protagonist's pasts to explain why they're wired the way they are. The next part is going to be a glance at the four main characters with spoilers.

  • Ono Yusuke: His deal is that he's a gay guy that every man is attracted to, except one who we'll get into later, and so naturally he has one night stands every night. Ofc every woman finds him handsome too, but he's traumatized by women and can't be around them for too long because when he was young, he saw his mom cheat on his amazing father :( ...only for us to find out from his sister that his dad also cheated on the mom lmao. This is tacked on at the very end of the comic, so we don't even see if this changes his opinion on women at all? Naturally he's the greatest baker ever too, with even top French bakers from five star hotels wanting him to work for them and fuck him!!! [ROLLING MY EYES UNTIL THEY'RE FALLING OUT OF MY SOCKETS RN]
  • Kanda Eiji: This is the boxer guy. He becomes an apprentice under Ono after his injury (but don't worry, the manga makes sure to have other characters tell us that he was one of the top boxers in Japan!) He's also revealed to be a former teen delinquent who slept with many women before, but he's not about that life anymore ig. He's the character I had the least issue with because while he does suffer from some of the aforementioned writing issues, I like that we see him start off as a weak baker and get better as the series progresses. However, the story also feels the need to tell us that Eiji's potential is so great that one day he'll even surprass Ono, so even he's not immune to the "this is the most perfect and loveable guy ^-^" beam.
  • Tachibana Keiichiro: Owner of Antique and the first person we're actually introduced to. I was actually okay with him because he actually does have some flaws such as being quick to anger and being unlucky in love/not adored by everyone he meets. We learn that he was actually the person that rejected Ono from the flashback. Then the story reveals that he was kidnapped as a child. At first it's implied that he was abducted for ransom because he comes from a rich family, until there's a twist where we find out how he was molested by the kidnapper. The last chapters are dedicated to him helping the police solve a kidnapping case, just not involving his kidnapper, but another one...only to see his actual kidnapper visit the bakery and walk off in the last chapter with no resolution? Uhh
  • Kobayakawa Chikage: Tachibana's childhood friend and assistant/bodyguard. He's kind of a microcosm of what I hate about this comic because he constantly needs to talk about how amazing and perfect both Tachibana and Ono are. His secret is that he's actually a dad. His daughter comes to the bakery in one chapter to cry about how her mom is soooo mean, only for Chikage to be like "no she isn't :)" and save the day or whatever. He does have one flaw at least in that he's as dumb as bricks.

Re: Tachibana's story, I don't mind when manga tackle sensitive topics like child sex abuse, but incorporating this topic in the middle of a whacky comedy just wasn't the move. Also, we learn that the molestation is the reason behind why he struggles to maintain his relationships, but the manga puts more emphasis on how the molestation is why Tachibana rejected Ono harshly as if that's the most pressing issue here.

The art is pretty average and I didn't find a single joke funny. Most of the humour is reliant on gags like "this guy is gay and thinks women are scary XDDD" or "woah, this guy is so pervy ROFLMAO!!!!" Other people seem to really love this based on how many adaptations it got, but I couldn't find anything I liked about it. People seem like how the comic portrays Ono's sexuality in a more realistic manner than BL typically does, but I find even that's undercut by all the goofiness going on. I'm not opposed to reading Yoshinaga Fumi's other works in the future, but this one felt like a chore to complete despite its short length.
